Mark Re-Watches ‘Cowboy Bebop’: Ballad of Fallen Angels

Today’s commission post (and tomorrow’s!) is thanks to Ryan Lohner. OH GOD, I REALLY NEEDED TO SEE THIS AGAIN.

The video file for my re-watch of “Ballad of Fallen Angels” is located here, and all Mark Watches videos are now indexed in my Dropbox folder.

  • I still feel strongly about what a compelling and necessary episode this is. In hindsight, it’s the keystone to understanding the show, the dynamic of the characters, and Spike’s behavior. I’m glad that this episode (and the next one) were the first I re-watched since I finished reviewing the show last month.
  • I see now how much this sets up the finale of Cowboy Bebop, too. We’ve got Spike facing his past with reckless abandon, we’ve got his friends begging him not to, and we have the apparent “death” of the main character as a way to highlight his need for closure.
  • Seriously, it’s entirely possible to watch this episode and make a case for the fact that Spike died when he was thrown out of the window of the cathedral. The neat thing is that I don’t think it makes the episodes that follow this at all bad or unnecessary either.
  • I KNOW WHAT ALL THE FLASHES AT THE END OF THE EPISODE MEAN. OH MY GOD, HELP.
  • I think this just made me miss these characters more than I expected to. Especially Jet and Edward. Oh god, Edward. Her last episode is still heartbreaking.
  • Tomorrow, I’m doing ”Sympathy For the Devil.” OH GOD HE’S NOT A KID
